Thank you for visiting my page. I am Irene Walsh and I have been a professional private tutor in New York City for over fifteen years, where I tutor middle school, high school, and college students. I specialize in teaching math, writing, and test preparation.
MATH: I teach many levels from basic number sense through pre-calculus, and I especially love teaching algebra and geometry. I educate students on how to look at math in a practical way so that any problem can feel accessible and familiar.
WRITING: I teach how to tackle various types of essays as well as the mechanics of writing, including correct grammar and punctuation. I show students how to review their work for errors and guide writers toward finding their own voice.
TEST PREP: I teach skills and strategies to dramatically improve standardized test scores. I tutor the following standardized exams: ACT, SAT, Regents, ISEE, PSAT, SSAT, IGCSE, and many others.
As I support my students in solving a math problem, writing an essay, or preparing for an exam, I am also guiding them toward being mindful of how they think and how to optimize their performance. My approach is highly individualized. Utilizing multiple intelligences, I identify a student's strengths and learning style and cater my instruction for optimal and immediate results. My philosophy is that every student should learn to be their own expert - in this way, they can excel academically as well as experience a sense of ownership and enthusiasm for their education...and beyond!
About me: In high school, I was in honors math, English, and science. I received college credit for both AP English and AP Calculus and was selected for Who's Who Among American High School Students. I also love theater and have received scholarships and awards for acting. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting and Directing, and have performed professionally as an actor and singer. I have used my training and experience as a performer and director to teach many students how to perform better in high-stress situations like tests and exams. I'm the daughter of two teachers and have a special needs sibling, so I've always been fascinated by the different ways people learn.
I create individualized plans and strategies that suit each student’s style and needs. I would appreciate the opportunity to share with your learner the many ways that they can maximize their unique abilities to achieve success.
